Review by Sandre the Giant The debut release from Finland’s Devastating Light, is only three tracks long but encompasses a whole half hour of sludgey doom. ‘I Have Already Failed You’ is out now in various formats. Devastating Light is a one man project, which makes the masterful craftsmanship of this record even more impressive. Opener ‘I’ creeps out with cold, quiet guitar and atmospherics before a gut rumbling riff lumbers into view. The concept here is of a man struggling with depression as well as becoming a new father. Having become a father in the last two years, I can relate a little. This record is infused with a wistful melancholy that is most in focus during the quieter sections, while the grinding doom rumbles of the heavier bits feel just as hopeless at times. ‘II’ juxtaposes an absolutely righteous groove with a potent, hellish roar into the void. You can feel a lot of Isis influence creeping in as well, especially on epic closer ‘III’. Powerful riffs cascade into a basin of atmospheric gloom, and it makes me yearn for more bands to be making music like this again. Channelling the lost spirits of Isis through sludgy doom riffs and showing a firm grasp of dynamic storytelling, Devastating Light have really written something special here. As debuts go, this is very impressive and it bodes well for future work.
