Legendary filmmaker Jake Hannaford (John Huston) is in the process of trying to complete his experimental movie The Other Side Of The Wind. On his birthday in an effort to secure more funding for the film he has a party populated by many people from fans, hangers on, industry members and prospective financiers. 



The Other Side Of The Wind is Orson Welles final movie completed over thirty years after his death. Pieced together from over one hundred hours of footage by editor Bob Murawski, Welles daughter Beatrice and friend Peter Bogdanovich, who also appears in the film. The making of the film is chronicled in They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead.



This film could easily be seen as a semi-autobiographical story for Welles. Hannaford is a legendary director, full of confidence and quick to put down people with witty barbs. He also is clearly struggling to complete a film due to financing and is making it on the fly. Peter Bogdanovich plays director Brooks Otterlake, a close friend of Hannaford. Bogdanovich of course is a film director who was a close friend of Welles. 



The story itself and the manner it is put together is incoherent and jarring. The film stock changes regularly, the images switch from black and white to colour, the editing is frenetic and the shots are filled with close ups and zooms. The entire thing feels like a hallucination or fever dream. 



At one point just before the hour mark the film within the film is played for the party attendees and I would not be surprised if the average viewer checks out at this point. Hannaford’s experimental feature which stars Orson Welles mistress Oja Kodar, who spends much of it naked has zero coherent narrative. 



John Huston, himself a famous director does give a brilliantly acerbic performance. Although be warned that some of his insults and jokes feature incredibly dated slurs. Remember this was filmed in the 1970’s. 



Ultimately I really could only recommend this to people interested in Welles himself as a curiosity. Is this 122 minute experiment the film he would have created if he had edited it together? Or was his purpose to never finish it in the first place to mirror the plot of the film? Either way I think the more interesting story is the one presented in the aforementioned documentary ‘They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead’.

If you take a stroll down internet lane (or one of those fabled book stores from before COVID-19), you will likely be able to find a plethora of books about filmmaking. You’ll find them from directors, actors, producers, and sometimes even cinematographers. What you are very unlikely to find, until now, is much of anything about production audio.



Coming from a career spanning 4 decades, Patrushkha Mierzwa has crafted perhaps the most concise, comprehensive, and broad spectrum look at the Utility Sound Technician position (UST), the entire sound department, and perhaps even the entire production crew as a whole. It has honestly been difficult to know where to start when describing her book. I keep writing, and then erasing, and starting back over again because it is tough to reduce the magnitude and scope of her work down to a blurb on a website. I want to start pouring over every part of the book with extreme detail about each individual point that I loved or that I wished that I had known when I first started working. The problem is that it would give too much away, and that I would be here for days. My point is that there are no non-impactful parts to her book. It’s THAT fantastic.



The dedication page of Behind The Sound CartWhile this book is primarily devoted to Utility Sound Technicians, as I pointed out above, it is also extremely helpful for the rest of the sound department. I also strongly suggest that anyone who works on a film set in any capacity read it, because it contains many insights that apply to being part of a crew in general.



I’m a Mixer. I have worked as a Utility only a handful of times, and a Boom Operator a bit more, however my experience is primarily in Mixing. I can safely say that I learned things about my own craft from reading Patrushkha’s book. Having the opportunity to absorb other perspectives is key to excelling in one’s own craft. Whether it was something that I never knew or understood, or whether it was something that I was well versed in, I came out of this read feeling like I just had both a crash course and a refresher course in so much of what I do. The UST doesn’t just know their job. They know the jobs of the Boom Operator and the Sound Mixer down flat.

















As you can see from the chapter list above, Patrushkha takes her time to be thorough and incredibly organized. You could call this a literal handbook as much as you could also call it a memoir or an attestation of the field itself. When she delves into an aspect of the job, she does it with context. It’s never some dry encyclopedia entry about simply “what is this department?” or “what does a Utility do?”, but at the same time it manages to answer all of those types of questions while being entertaining and profound.



Behind The Sound Cart takes the reader through virtually everything from preproduction through production, and doesn’t stop there. Being at work isn’t the only part of the job. It teaches you to handle the business side, how to market yourself, how to keep current on knowledge, and also how to maintain the gear before and after the shoot. For a timely reference, it even goes into Covid-19 protocols!



Each chapter is broken down into sub-sections for easy reference, and it really helps to give you a fantastic overview of what the book covers just from looking at the table of contents. Even after a full read through, you can and will want to go back to use certain chapters and sub-sections as guides before you get to set. It’s also fun to just go back for some tips and tricks of the trade that usually would have taken a whole lot of trial and error to figure out on your own. Plus, who doesn’t like

Pentagon’s 11th mini album is full of bright, romantic songs, perfect for the spring (and summer) season. It’s a contrast to their emotional albums from last year – Universe: The Black Hall and WE:TH.



Last year I promised myself I would start collecting Pentagon albums – so yes, I ordered all three versions of LOVE or TAKE.



Not to sound biased or anything, but I believe Pentagon has one of the best concept pictures. They simultaneously released the webtoon versions of the members with the corresponding real pictures. Even though I don’t watch anime, I don’t read manga, nor do I watch webtoons – but I can’t deny the webtoon version of Pentagon is so cute. I can’t wait to get the physical copy of their album(s) because I whole heartedly love everything about this.



So now let’s talk about the songs on their mini album.



The first song on their mini album is “10s and”. The Korean title is “10초 전” (10 seconds ago). Hui wrote this song thinking it would be great for an animation (he mentions it in the behind the scenes video of their photoshoot for their album here). The song is bright, romantic, and sweet. The countdown easily got stuck in my head. I think it’s a great way to start the album.



I read many people online say this song doesn’t sound like Pentagon. But I think this shows how Pentagon can express themselves with different sounds and genres. They’re a group that is constantly evolving with different music styles and I love it. By the way, both Hui and Wooseok composed and wrote this song.

Here’s my reaction to Pentagon’s “DO or NOT” MV.



The title track of the mini album “DO or NOT” is about asking someone if they love you or not. The guys keep a cool persona by repeating that regardless of the answer, they don’t care. Hui also took part in writing the song. In their behind the scenes video (here) he mentions, “It [the song] begins with the question ‘Do or not?’ I wanted to show the coolest guys’ image in the world. The coolest guys in the world will do something if they like it or won’t do it if they don’t care.”



“DO or NOT” will have you jumping along to the chorus. I love the opening of the song, the guys sound like they’re an acapella group.



Left to right – Shinwon, Hongseok, Kino, Wooseok, Hui, Yeo One, Yuto, and Yanan. The song is fun and I love how the music video equally matches it. I couldn’t stop smiling while watching the video. Each member tries to win the girl in various ways. It’s cute, bright, and bubbly. As someone who is constantly bias wrecked by a different member with each comeback…this music video made every member a bias wrecker for me. For the record, Hui is my main bias 😉



Left to right – Wooseok, Shinwon, Hongseok, Kino, Hui, Yeo One, Yuto, and Yanan.The next song on the album “1 + 1” is a love song about finding the one and wanting to be theirs – wanting to be a couple. The chorus is addicting, after listening to this song once it’ll be stuck in your head. I’ll be honest I love all the songs on this mini album but “1 + 1” is one of my top favorite tracks (my number one fav track is coming up next). I mentioned in my reaction video that I would love to see a choreography to this song. I’m hoping maybe Kino can create something and the guys can perform it.

After buying it on the release date several months ago, I finally finished volume 1 of I’m in Love with the Villainess, a yuri otome isekai light novel.



Ordinary office worker Oohashi Rei wakes up in the body of the protagonist of her favorite otome game, Revolution. To her delight, the first person to greet her is also her favorite character, Claire Francois—the main antagonist of the story! Now, Rei is determined to romance Claire instead of the game’s male leads. But how will her villainous ladylove react to this new courtship?!

I’m in Love with the Villainess is very charming and has lots of moments that made me laugh out loud; however, it also has many heartwarming moments and addresses things such as homophobia.



I highly enjoyed the banter between Rei and Claire. I also like that it is explicitly stated that Rei only likes girls. I also like that Rei has written Revolution fanfiction. It’s something I find relatable as a fanfiction writer myself. The only negative thing I have to say about the characters is that the princes have had little character development and I can’t remember them other than Thane; however, they are far from the focus of the story.



Overall, I loved volume 1 of I’m in Love with the Villainess and I can’t wait to read volume 2 and see how the relationship between Rei and Claire develops. I’d also like to mention that I have had a great time following the author, Inori, on Twitter.

Nothing in global cinema is more culturally specific than comedy. I have written in the past about the Hong Kong comedy style known as ‘mo lei tau’, a sort of nonsensical and deliberately silly combination of wordplay, non-sequitur, and slapstick most famously expressed by screen legend Stephen Chow in the likes of Shaolin Soccer (2001) and Kung-Fu Hustle (2004). Less famous, but just as deeply steeped in the mo lei tau tradition, is director and actor Jeffrey Lau. His film 92 Legendary La Rose Noire is a fascinating and frenetic comedy which, while rather opaque for international audiences, still packs in enormous entertainment value.
Butterfly Wong (Maggie Shiu) is a children’s novelist who, upon getting unintentionally involved in a murderous drug deal, leaves behind a note claiming to be 1960s spy character Black Rose. She hopes it will confuse police and stop them from investigating her. Instead it attracts the attention of the real Black Rose’s apprentices (Wong Wan-sze and Fung Bo Bo), as well as lovestruck police detective Keith Lui (Tony Leung Ka-fai).
Tony Leung is rightfully heralded as one of Hong Kong’s finest ever actors, and it is proof of his versatility to see him amiably charm his way through this comedy with as much effort and talent as he has applied to more serious fare like Ashes of Time, Election, and Our Time Will Come. He holds the unique achievement of having won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards four times across four decades – and in the 1990s he won it for 92 Legendary La Rose Noire. He embraces the absurdity of the piece beautifully. Maggie Shiu (PTU, Breaking News) likewise commits herself wonderfully, although it is a shame her character feels somewhat sidelined during the film’s second half.
The real stand-outs, however, are Wong Wan-sze and Fung Bo Bo as Yim-fam and Piu-hung, apprentices to the Black Rose. They are a delightfully odd couple – Yim-fam has fierce anger management issues, while Piu-hung appears to suffer from a recurrent amnesia that leads her to believe Keith is her father. Their comic timing is impeccable, and both nail the tone of Lau’s screenplay. Fung was awarded Best Supporting Actress at the HKFA for her efforts – the film received another seven nominations, for Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Costuming, Score, and Supporting Actress for Wong and Teresa Mo (who plays Butterfly’s best friend Wai-kuen).
The quality and critical acclaim belies the film’s extremely limited production values; like many pre-handover features Rose Noire seems budgeted on the proverbial smell of an oily rag. It is testament to its comedic merits that such limitations honestly do not seem to hold it back. It is also clear that, as a non-Hong Kong viewer, I have missed out half of the jokes. The Black Rose is an actual spy character from Yuen Chor’s 1965 film Hei Mei Gui, in which two sisters create the persona to engage in Robin Hood-like burglaries across the city. Rose Noire does not simply work as absurdism – it’s clearly also a carefully staged parody.
Comedy is a very personal genre, and what works as humour in one culture does not always align with what works in another. Chinese language comedy is often a particular challenge from not Chinese-speaking audiences. I feel I am progressively gaining a taste for it: the puns may not land for a foreign language speaker, but the absurdism certainly does. If you warmed to Stephen Chow’s breakout comedies, Jeffrey Lau’s ouevre – including the likes of The Eagle-Shooting Heroes, A Chinese Odyssey, and La Rose Noire – are a pretty great second destination.

Kelly Reichardt is incredibly gifted at gleaning gold from atypical cinematic perspectives. The film is set in 1820s Oregon, a time of opportunity for some and hardship for others. This sounds very familiar but the beauty of the film is its understanding of how these two factors are related, and how they coalesce in the main character. Cookie is a man who can bring a lot to society: when he is able to later, he makes delicious cakes that become the most popular thing in the local – for want of a better word – market. This gets him recognised by the local gentry, Chief Factor (Toby Jones), and reaps him real financial rewards. At the start, though, Cookie is shown as somewhat useless. He brings little to the initial expedition and is maligned by the Trappers. This arc from seemingly unskilled to incredibly competent is merely defined by access to resources and due to the external environment. At the beginning of the film, we find mushrooms growing in the dirt and this symbolically resonates throughout the film: things flourish in the right environment.



On one level, this is a beautiful film about friendship. The centrepiece is the beautifully captured partnership between Cookie and King-Lu. The dialogue is sparse but the affection shown through the subtleties in their performances is just astounding. As mentioned, Magaro’s Cookie is reserved and cinematically atypical; Orion Lee’s King-Lu is also an atypical protagonist. We are used to this period as a filmic location, a fertile playground for stories depicting the American Dream – of which this is one (though a very different one). However, this film includes a pleasing diversity of perspectives that feels incredibly natural. King-Lu’s Chinese background is core to the story of the film, if not the plot per-se (though this is definitely a film that places story over plot). These wider insights and backgrounds make this a more fulfilling and engaging portrait of ‘The West’. The underlying concept of it as a land of opportunity feels less orchestrated. And while the film still clearly criticises this notion, it presents it as an overriding viewpoint – the diversity of perspectives just increases this idea of everybody trying to get something out of one place.



On its most satisfying level, this film functions as a very perceptive allegory about the relationship between labour and resources. Everything works as an effortlessly naturalistic portrait of rural living on the edge of modernity, but everything also works as a microcosm for society. After setting out its characters, we make our way to the core conceit of the film: Toby Jones’ Chief Factor has bought a cow. It is the first cow to reach the area and is, for reasons that will soon become clear, a very big deal. Chief Factor, however, has nothing he can really do with this cow. He is a landowner and he has received a literal means of production; his status has afforded it to him though he is obviously not the best person to have it. When she was still pondering, thinking about her plan…
‘Peng’ a sound. Suddenly someone was kicking opened her office room. As seen…
“My God, Director Yu, Director Yu. You shouldn’t act like this…” It was Lisa’s voice that heard. Although Lisa was little bit afraid, trying to stop Yu Ao Tian who was showing his blacken face when heading to the CEO room. She still tried to catch up with him and once she saw Yao Yao, Lisa showed her helpless expression as if she was trying to tell her, she has tried her best to stop him.

Right after Lisa closed the door, as seen Yu Ao Tian has already rushed alike an arrow to Yao Yao in front: “I have told you that I have waited for you. Why didn’t you come down? Or are you waiting for me to go up and ask you about it?”
Listened to Yu Ao Tian angry speaking sound, Yao Yao finally realized this man indeed had his own way. Since he didn’t see the person he has been waiting, directly he rushed coming to find her, awesome!
