Jerry & Tom.
I’m not a big fan of Tom & Jerry as a franchise. The cartoons are a classic
Kayla Forester (Chloe Grace Moretz) cons her way into a temp job at the fancy Royal Gate Hotel for the big wedding between celebrities Preeta Mehta (Pallavi Sharda) and Ben (Colin Jost). Jerry shows up at the same time to make the hotel his new home and naturally hotel owner Henry Dubros (Rob Delaney) and manager Terrance Mendoza (Michael Pena) can’t have a mouse running around the hotel.
Since Tom and Jerry are both selfish assholes with a predilection for destroying property, the duo leave a path of destruction in their wake as they endlessly beat the crap out each other. Kayla meanwhile has a vested interest in the two not destroying the hotel, as her job rides on it.

Tom and Jerry are both voiced via archival footage from William Hanna and Mel Blanc. Bobby Cannavale plays the brutish Spike pretty well. There are also appearances by Ken Jeong playing his usual self absorbed personality as the head chef, Patsy Ferran as Joy, the bellhop who everyone thinks is weird but is really smart.
This Tom & Jerry lives in a world where all of the animals are CG and apparently vary widely in their intelligence and adherence to the laws of physics. The CG isn’t terrible but characters don’t fit in with the world at all. It’s not a problem with the CG itself but the celf-shading doesn’t integrate as well as it should and it looks even more out of place than say Space Jam all those years ago.
Chloe Moretz has fantastic eyebrows.

Ultimately this is a fun movie for people of all ages. If you have the luxury of an open movie theater in your state you should take your kids to see it. Otherwise it is nearly two hours to spend at home watching HBO Max for no additional cost.
Tom & Jerry isn’t a “must see” by any stretch of the imagination, but it is enjoyable.

Sometimes I make myself feel guilty about my book choices. Occasionally it’s the actual type of book – although that’s less common since I taught myself to (generally) not be embarrassed about romance fiction. More often these days it’s about re-reading. Because how can I consider re-reading when there are books I own that I haven’t read yet??



2020 involved both a fair bit of guilt and a fair bit of “need comfort, shuddup brain”. I got to December and really wanted to read a certain trilogy but realised I had already comfort-re-read it that year. I found something else that was reassuring to read instead.







This post is brought to you because I just finished re-reading the Ancillary trilogy by Ann Leckie. It was the fifth time I had read Ancillar Justice, and the fourth time for Ancillary Sword and Mercy. (I seem to have not read Sword when it first came out, or something??) And there are still things that I had forgotten – details that delighted me again – and bits that I had forgotten. And along with all of that, the magnificent reasons why we – I – re-read: the comfort of knowing that the writing will be good. That (in this instance) things will work out ok, despite the dramatic and serious problems. That even though I’ve forgotten details, I know in the back of my head these are books that I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. I inhaled them, once again.



The fact that Breq refers to everyone as “she” because there’s no gendering in her language struck me again, not least because I remember it being one of the big issues everyone brought up eight years ago when it was published; this sort of recursive thinking is also part of the reason for why re-reading is fun – you get to reflect on your initial reflections and see how things have changed. I admit, I did once again find myself sometimes wondering about the gender of different characters, just like every other time, and then reminding myself that the point is it literally doesn’t matter. I was also massively struck, once again, by the imperialism and colonialism aspects – Arkady Martine’s A Memory Called Empire now contributes to the dialogue on this issue in fascinating ways that I still haven’t sat down to fully analyse.



The part that got me more this time is the delightful almost-domestic aspects that contrast spectacularly with the empire-threatening aspects. Breq and Seivarden’s relationship – its development, its purpose, the difficulty both of them have with it; relationships between crew and ship; and the actual familial relationships too. I find I am becoming more interested in exploring ‘found family’ in fiction, and I’m intrigued to realise how often this is part of the narratives I already enjoy.



This will not be the last time I read this trilogy and I am almost excited for future-me that I get to come back again.



(After finishing Mercy I then spent about an hour and a half faffing around trying to figure out what to do next because my brain really wanted to start re-reading Yoon Ha Lee’s Machineries of Empire series, and I felt too guilty to consider it. Then I finally gave in. And Ninefox Gambit is just mad, wonderful, brilliance (and I had completely forgotten how it opens). )

The interwoven stories of two hitmen, their boss, his wife, two robbers, and a boxer. Co-written, directed by, and starring Quentin Tarantino, this is the second major film in his canon. Visually and emotionally violent. Tarantino’s use of the N-word is gratuitous and disturbing. My main goal in life is to win a dance competition now.

Like many fans, I have a very strong love/hate relationship with Tarantino and his films. I’ve seen Reservoir Dogs (against my will), Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, both Kill Bill films, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For the most part, I’ve enjoyed his body of work and have found merit in each individual story he tells. In Pulp Fiction, the characters were well written and developed, the cinematography was stylistically gorgeous, and the story structure was executed well in a way that challenged and rewarded the audience.There’s a certain trend in his work that has grown and shapeshifted throughout his nearly forty-year career as a filmmaker. Tarantino wants to trust the audience.

As previously mentioned, the characters are well-written and fleshed out. Everything from their outfits to their cars to their physical mannerisms to the direction in which they part their hair is for a specific reason. Tarantino’s homages to his favorite filmmakers and artistic movements are omnipresent and each rewatch of a scene gives you something new to focus on. I could watch Uma Thurman dance the twist forever. Because the characters’ personalities are so central to how each story plays out, the audience wants to stay with them. Tarantino knows that and uses it to his advantage.



One reason why I get excited every time I sit down to watch a Tarantino flick is because I expect the relationships between characters to be equally well-developed. In Pulp Fiction, there’s a development in each of the major relationships: Mia and Vince, Vince and Jules, Honey Bunny and Pumpkin, Fabienne and Butch, Butch and Marcellus, and even Butch and Vince. Whether they grow to love/hate each other or become closer/more distant, the relationship changes throughout each of the stories and through many different perspectives. Tarantino believes in the audience to understand the minutiae of how each relationship changes and the significance of the subtle differences in outfits, cars, mannerisms, and hair parts.

So, by taking each story and jumping back and forth in time, he’s not only putting faith in the audience to remember the preceding scenes and events, but rewarding us by adding more context and depth to the moments we’ve already experienced onscreen. Tarantino gives us the puzzle pieces and trusts us to put the pieces together on our own.



There comes a time in this movie (and in Tarantino movies past) where that trust becomes muddled. Perhaps h

Think of the darkest part of yourself.



I’m talking about that piece of yourself you’d never share with anyone; the most reprehensible, most messed up, most horrifying, deepest, darkest desire, fantasy or thought. That hidden, terrifying, annihilating fragment of you.



MADK is trying to approach that. It’s the most viscerally horrific, disturbing BL manga I’ve ever read. It’s also one of the most beautiful.



On the surface, MADK‘s premise isn’t far off from your typical manga tropes. Messed up high school boy summons demon and forges a pact that sees him dragged to hell and live as part of a demon prince’s court. Plenty of latitude for some over the top Black Butler-esque gothic darkness, gore and perversion.



Within the first 20 pages MADK blows that clean out of the water and jets off into space to find a less boring planet. Preferably with prehensile monster cock.







As it turns out, the “sexual kink others would see as disgusting” of high schooler Makoto, as advertised in the synopsis, is his desire to eat someone alive. Not your standard BL fare.



Summoning a demon is his compromise with himself. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone, but he’s always been fascinated by books on serial killers and cannibals; he used to collect roadkill and hide it in his room until he was found out. And then there’s the sexual element of his desire to eat someone alive… He’s terrified his fascination and desires will lead him to doing the unthinkable and he doesn’t see his soul as worth saving, so exchanging it to a demon for the chance to fulfill his fantasy on a non-human, technically non-living entity seems an easy choice.



Supremely powerful demon Archduke J’s world is well suited to a monster like Makoto. Oh, sure, it’s an awkward adjustment as his disembodied head is mounted on a dog’s body while waiting for a human one, and then demons clamber to feast on the former human–feast in any meaning imaginable–but his kinks and desires seem tame in comparison to those of demons. And those pale in comparison to the machinations of the demons vying for power, constantly attempting to surpass one another to lord over the rest. In hell, Makoto learns, words and especially names have just as much or more power than physical violence.



We’ve established MADK is intensely dark and disturbing, so what makes it a good manga?



First of all, Ryo Suzuri’s art is some of the most gorgeous I’ve seen in any manga, taking full advantage of the black and white with masterful contrasting and shading. Often greyscale feels like a limitation with manga–it’s more pleasing to see our favourite beautiful boys in full colour–but in MADK it feels like a feature. The art is lush and expressive, disturbing, of course, but Suzuri has a talent for obscuring some (only some) of the most messed up moments with close ups, blurring or contrast so the reader has to fill in the horrific blanks. There’s a moment close to the start where a… non-standard orifice is created and sodomized. I’ll leave it at that.



This is balanced against a compelling world and story. Maybe its because BL is mostly set in mundane locations that we don’t get to see a writer weave a world like MADK‘s hell, but this too is refreshing and masterfully done. The reader learns about hell a

From a very young age, Kevin Maxwell was very clear that he was going to be a Police Officer when he grew up. As a young, mixed race boy who was living in Toxteth during the infamous riots of the early 80s you would think this would be the last thing he would want to be but despite other high profile incidents like the Hillsborough disaster and the Stephen Lawrence enquiry nothing could change his mind and in the months after the September 11th attacks in 2001 he started his Police training and eventually joined Greater Manchester Police, spending many years there before moving on to the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Metropolitan Police in London. Despite being a hard working and extremely dedicated Officer his career was filled with setbacks and abuse because he dared to be a gay, Black Police Officer. In “Forced Out” he tells the full story of exactly what went on during his time in the Police.







I saw “Forced Out” over on Instagram after my friend, Siobhain, had reviewed it and it sounded so interesting I had to read it so she very kindly lent it to me.



I honestly don’t know where to begin with my thoughts on this. Maxwell’s writing is very detailed and methodical, as you would no doubt expect from a former Police Officer, but he also beautifully conveys the emotions he feels when dealing with the abuse he suffered during his career with the Police.



The book is split into 3 parts; the first dealing with Maxwell’s upbringing in Liverpool and then his time with the Police up until his breakdown; the second part deals with his diagnosis of depression and his fight against the Force; and the third deals with what happened after his eventual resignation from the Police and their reaction to his accusations.



The first thing that really struck me is how much Maxwell wanted to be a Police Officer. This was his absolute dream job and all he had wanted to be since he was a kid. This isn’t a person with an axe to grind. Right from the start of his career he put up with racist and homophobic abuse but he kept trying to just push it down as complaining got you nowhere. Nobody should go to work and be subjected to abuse. The fact that Maxwell only joined the Police in 2001 was shocking. I can only imagine how much worse things were in years gone by.



Throughout the book there is never any question that Maxwell was extremely good at his job, which makes his story all the more devastating. The Police have lost an incredibly dedicated and talented Officer who should have been an asset because instead of clamping down on abuse and stamping it out when it occurred the hierarchy chose the wrong side, closed ranks around the perpetrators and engaged in behaviours designed to humiliate or gaslight the victims and eventually get them out of the Force. Maxwell isn’t the only Officer that this has happened to, “Forced Out” contains details of others and, as always, these are only the ones that are known.



A lot has been said, particularly recently, about the state of policing in the US but here in the UK there is an overwhelming consensus that it’s purely a US problem and that our Country and our Police are absolutely fine. This is an extremely naive view to take. I know that not all Police are bad; I personally know people who do currently or have in the past worked in the Police and yes they are great people, I would have absolute faith in them but that doesn’t mean that everyone who joins the Police is like them and just because my friends aren’t racist or homophobic doesn’t mean that no Police Officers are. I don’t believe in making sweeping generalisations either way; not all Police are good people and not all are bad.
